Music brings back the feeling of life when nothing else can

Music for Dementia 2020

How can music help you?

It is anticipated that there will be one million people living with dementia in the UK by 2021.

Research has shown that music and music therapy has the ability to help reduce the often-distressing symptoms of dementia, such as agitation, apathy and anxiety.

Sadly not everyone living with dementia has access to music and this has to change.

Our aim is to make music available to everyone living with dementia by 2020.

What types of musical activity could I do?

There are a variety of different ways to engage in music when you are living or caring for a person with dementia.

  1. Listen to music, turn on the radio, sing together.
  2. Create a playlist with someone and listen to it together.
  3. Experience and participate in live music making.
  4. Work with a music therapist.
  5. Ask all care workers to make music a part of the daily care plan.

Whatever you choose to do, make music a part of your daily life!

About the campaign

To ensure every person living with dementia has access to music, we are taking the lead by creating a taskforce of stakeholders from across the music and dementia fields to embed music into dementia care pathways.

How to access music?

The M4D2020 team is working hard to create an interactive database that shows you what range of musical activities are available in your area. Please check back here in early 2019 to see what is available in your area.
